Hospitals Prepare for Flu Season

Posted: Updated:

It's not the most exciting *or* most comfortable errand to run, but getting an annual flu shot is   important.

Health providers say getting vaccinated at the *beginning* of flu season is really important, because influenza can have serious complications.

"It can actually lead to death," says Jennifer Beckwith, doctor at Sanford Health. "Especially in people that are old, people that are very young, people that are immune-compromised. Even in people that are completely healthy-there are certainly multiple stories of otherwise healthy children, healthy people...getting influenza and dying."

And this year, those who decide to get vaccinated will be getting a more powerful vaccine than before.

"The Quadrivalient protects against four strains of the flu instead of just three," says Beckwith.

Because influenza is a virus, Beckwith says there's no cure once you contract it, but you can reduce the symptoms by taking over the counter medications.

"Ibuprofen, Tylenol, if you have a fever, if you have body aches, staying very well-hydrated, resting...we always recommend, too, washing your hands and making sure everybody around you is remembering to wash their hands," says Beckwith.

Patients have different options when it comes to getting the vaccinated for the flu. They can have a nasal mist, or they can take a shot right in the arm.

Getting vaccinated is a simple precautionary measure you can take to help insure you stay healthy this flu season.
