Norwegians Group Tours Bakken

Posted: Updated:

The Bakken is making global headlines, and a group of Norwegian journalists were in North Dakota to check out oil country.

The amount of oil coming out of the Bakken is continuing to grow, and people around the world are taking notice.

A group of journalists from Norway, and Statoil executive were in oil country today get a look at a rig and a frac operation.

Drilling for oil isn't anything new to Norwegians, but all of the rigs in Norway are offshore. One of the journalists says seeing the Bakken first hand is amazing.

"I've never been to this area before. I've never seen an onshore rigging operation before," said U.S. Correspondent for Norwegian Business Daily Morten Bertelsen.

This Statoil rig is about 10 miles west of Ross, and is one of the most modern rigs in the Bakken. After it's done drilling in one place, these legs walk the rig to its next spot.

"I found it quite fascinating. That's such a big structure actually can move, and it can do it up to 100 feet, that's quite a feat," Bertelsen added.

Having a walking rig allows for better efficiency because workers don't have to break down the entire rig to move it.

"I'm very impressed with what I've been seeing here. We have great progress in our drilling. The efficiency is going up, and we have very good safety results on thus rig as well," said Senior Vice President for Statoil U.S. Onshore Torstein Hole.

Hole says walking rigs are specific to the US, and using them saves more than just time.

"If we can reduce the number of days we use each well, then we can drill a lot more wells for the same amount of money," added Hole.

After the rig tour was over, the group went to a frac site that is being prepped for an oil well.

"I've been covering oil in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Arctic, and South America but this is what, to some extent, changing the oil markets, and that's fascinating with your own eyes," Bertelsen added.

Seeing the size of the Bakken is what impressed these journalists from Norway the most.
