U.S. House Reduces Food Stamps

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. House approved reducing spending on food stamps without a single Democratic vote.

Representatives separated it from the Farm Bill that the Senate passed in July. Spending will be cut back 39 billion dollars over ten years.

"But under the House proposal, at least four million low-income Americans, including many North Dakotans, will be prevented from receiving support during a time when they need it most," says Senator Heidi Heitkamp.

While millions of Americans would lose benefits, Republicans say it would only affect people without dependent children who earn too much money to qualify.

"I don't question the democrats wanting to feed the needy. I share that commitment. But I resent the idea somehow asking able bodied adults without dependents to be looking for work as a requirement is somehow immoral," says Representative Kevin Cramer.

Republican leaders say the bill eliminates loopholes that allowed ineligible people to receive benefits.
