Now that the Minot State hockey team won last year's national championship, there will be no more sneaking up on teams. MSU enjoyed its off season this summer for a little bit but it was right back down to business.
"You got to flip that switch. Midsummer you get back on the ice, get that itch. It's something you can't really explain. You want that cup. That cup's ours. You don't want anyone else touching that once you've had a taste of it," goalie Wyatt Waselenchuk says.
Forgive Wyatt's selfishness. You can't blame him. These guys have a legitimate shot of repeating. Waselenchuk is the reigning ACHA player of the year and legitimate scorers come back. Michael Jordan and Logan Herauf both led the team in points last year with 49. The Beavers will rely on speed more this year rather than strength. No matter how they go about it, the goal's still the same.
"Like it's been said before, you have that feeling where it's our cup now. The last thing I want or anyone else in the dressing room there is to give that up and that comes with the culture of winning is that hunger to get it back," defenseman Brad Olynyk says.
The Beavers open up play Friday against Briercrest on the road.
