On-the-Job Safety Training

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota's Oil field can be a dangerous place.  Large machinery, harsh weather, and long days can lead to accidents in the Bakken.

But, to cut down on mistakes and injuries, Dakota M-E-P held an Effective Job Instruction workshop in the Magic City.  The seminar focused on the best way to train new oil-field employees on how to handle their jobs safely and correctly everyday.  In North and South Dakota, there is a high percentage of on the job injuries.  From retail to energy, 45 to 80 percent of accidents involve employees that are new to their job.

"Safety just makes good business sense.  It's expensive to deal with injuries.  When we look at the costs that we try to capture from a safety incident, we only capture about 2/3rds of what the actual cost is.  Those are things like medical bills, works comp claims, and rate adjustments.  But we don't catch all the intangibles like how do those things affect moral, how do they affect turnover, how do they affect productivity and cost.  So there's a strong reason for both employee and employer to take a strong interest in safety," said Terry Cox with Dakota MEP
