USDA Nutritionist Addresses School Lunch Concerns

Posted: Updated:

Changes to the Bismarck Public School system's lunch program over the last three years have been a success. An increase in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains create a more complex and more costly meal plan. But the Regional USDA Senior Nutritionist says the cost is being slightly offset by a grant that pans out to an extra six cents for every student lunch.

"It's a lot to do for a small amount of money. But Bismarck Public Schools has found a way to provide the increased fruits and vegetables and maintaining a relatively low cost for school lunch. And so they are going a great job here," says Gina O'Brian, Senior food nutritionist, USDA.

Bismarck School's lunch program takes the updated national dietary guideline and the Institute of Medicine's recommendations into their meal creation.
