City Water Expands

Posted: Updated:

Even though they aren't moving, residents in Williston will be switching their water services. Earlier this year, Williston city commissioners annexed more than 4,800 acres of land into the city. That brought in new residents to Williston, who had been living in the county. Right now, those residents are hooked up to rural water, city commissioners accepted a bid on Tuesday to start expanding city water lines to the annexed part of town.

Construction on the project will be underway soon, and public works is hoping everything is installed by the end of the fall. Operations manager Scott Molstad says the city will be adding water main extensions, so they won't have to use rural water's lines.

"We connect the start of the rural water system to the end of the rural water system, and then we disconnect the rural water source and we source it by city water," says Public Works operations manager Scott Molstad.

Rural water and city water both come from the Williston Water Treatment Plant, so Molstad says there will be no change in water quality or cost.

"The cost of the water, I don't believe will change substantially. I believe that the rural water billing is the same as the city water billing costs," adds Molstad.

More than 300 residents will be making the switch to city water. Molstad says ten percent of residents have already connected to city water.

"We're going to utilize the same meters in the house, we're just going to read them on the day that we change from rural water source to city water source," Molstad adds.

Molstad said there might be a brief shutdown when they transfer the water service over, but residents are being notified when and how long it will last.
