Hospital Gets Creative for Workers

Posted: Updated:

Mercy Medical Center has just recently added new Filipino nurses and lab technicians to their staff. This new staff is intelligent, hard working and excited to be here in Williston.

"The thing I like here is the people. The people are good, they're basically hospitable. Most Americans here are really helpful so that's what I like about Williston" said new employee Price Batausa.

"I find the people very friendly and the place is so clean and the people are very disciplined and respectful. So I think this is a nice place to live in" added new employee Teri Callejo.

"I believe coming here will give us a better life, a better future for our families said Filipino employee Janice Fortun.

The new employees are lab technicians at Mercy and they are known to others as unsung heroes.

"They call us the living vampires, you know? We take peoples blood and analyze their body fluids. It's a service, but were more of the behind the scene heroes" Janice added.

A common goal is to keep working at the hospital and ultimately acquire their green cards.

"The basic goal is residence in this country for sure and to contribute much in Williston and at Mercy" Batausa added.

Dan Bjerknes, the Head of Human Resources at Mercy, explained why the Filipinos fit so well into the hospital's program.

"The programs in the Philippines for medical technologists and registered nurses are very similar to the programs in the united states. So, it's a great fit for us to reach out to individuals that want to come to the United States and it's almost a seamless transition" stated Bjerknes.

Mercy Medical is extremely excited with how the program has worked out.

"They're doing a fabulous job. They have assimilated very well with our employees here at mercy and the community of Williston. We hope to get more in the future" added Bjerknes.

While a long ways from home, the Filipino workers do not feel homesick. They say they have formed strong friendships with each other here in Williston.
