Doctors Say State is Vulnerable to Measles Outbreak

Posted: Updated:

It's not out of the realm of possibility for a measles outbreak in North Dakota.

The state health department says nearly 95 percent of American children are vaccinated against the measles. But in North Dakota that percentage is lower, at only 90 percent.

"Measles is one of the most contagious diseases. It can hang around for two hours after someone's left . If someone is not protected, if they're not immune, they're very likely to get the disease," says immunization surveillance coordinator Amy Schwartz.

Schwartz says the vaccination is required for students entering school. However, parents can request an exemption for religious, medical or philosophical reasons.
