University of Mary Student Speaks in Washington

Posted: Updated:

President Barack Obama and past Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter are all featured speakers in the Let Freedom Ring Commemorative Call to Action Closing Ceremony in Washington D.C. for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

"Just got an e-mail yesterday that I'll be speaking between one and two minutes, so it's going to be strict," says Alayna Eagleshield.

Eagleshield, a senior at the University of Mary, will also be on those steps speaking on the Freedom to Prosper. This week, the Coalition for Jobs, Justice and Freedom is hosting a seven day celebration to honor the march led by Civil Rights Leader Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

"They gave me three options. The freedom to prosper, freedom to co-exist, and the freedom to participate in government, but I can speak about whatever I want. I had to focus on one of them. So, I chose the freedom to prosper, and it'll be from the heart about what means the most to me, my culture, my language and where I come from," says Eagleshield.

"Alayna does represent what we practice here at the University of Mary, our Benedictine values of hospitality, community. And she's accepted our community, as well as us accepting her community. The University of Mary is very excited about Alayna's opportunity to go to Washington for the March on Washington event," says University of Mary communications director Tom Ackerman.

Although, this is the first week of school for the University of Mary, Alayna is being given a pass for the next few days. She is excited to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity that only a handful of people were chosen for.
