Students Score Below National Average on ACT Exams

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota's 2013 graduating class scored slightly below the national average on their ACTs.

"It's really disappointing!" says Brittany Robertson.

"It doesn't really shock me because I don't think the kids care as much as other states. Some people here think, 'I'm going to go to the oil fields right after high school.' So, they don't really care about college then," says freshman Glen Nelson.

But feelings are not the only factor. The ACT changed how students are grouped for scoring and adjusted the benchmark scores for both reading and science. Add to that, North Dakota is only one of eleven states that tests all of its eleventh and twelfth graders.

"These ACT scores are very very valuable  to us as educators. And it's important that even after we've considered  those significant factors. That it's also important that we take a look at these scores analytically and say ok this is where we're at. And this is where our students are needing assistance and more support and better instruction," says State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler.

To answer that need, Baesler says North Dakota is enhancing evaluation standards for principals and teachers so they can better teach the students.  But nobody's panicking.

North Dakota, educators feel that students' scores are fine overall. The superintendent is confident schools are up to the challenge and students will continue to benefit from the improvements educators are making within their own classrooms.
