An organization for some of the world's smartest people has elected a North Dakota man to its American Board of Directors.
Greg Kontz of Dickinson will serve as Regional Vice-Chair to the
American Mensa Board. He represents Region 7, which contains North
Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, and
Missouri. Kontz acts as the liaison between the Heartland Region, as
it's also called, and the national board.
He is the first North Dakotan on the national Mensa Board of Directors.
"Mensa is an international organization, and so having someone from
little old Dickinson, North Dakota, and not only be running the region
but on the national board, is a pretty big deal," says North Dakota
Mensa member Ashley Stark.
In order to become a member of Mensa, applicants need to place in the
top two percent of the population on a standardized test. Kontz joined
Mensa in 1978, but after a lapse in participation rejoined in 2000.
Since then, he has helped the Dickinson and North Dakota Mensa chapters
"I put together a test session here in Dickinson and we tested more
people than Denver did. We tested 38 people here which is unheard of for
a community this size," Kontz says.
North Dakota's statewide Mensa group now has over 80 members, and is an extremely active group.
"Of the 133 local groups within American Mensa, one group gets what's
called the GOTYA Awards, which is Group of the Year Award, and the last
five years we've won it four times," Kontz explains.
A regional Mensa meeting will take place in Dickinson next year.
