Light of Christ Sets Record Enrollment

Posted: Updated:

More students fill the classrooms of St. Mary's Central High School today than this school has seen in years, with a 13-percent increase in enrollment over the last five years. Crowding is inevitable.

"Growth is a wonderful problem to have and we're so excited about it. We just want to do it well and make sure our students are taken care of," says superintendent Dr. Rick Kruska.

For the 2013-2014 school year, Light of Christ Catholic Schools, which includes St. Mary's, has over 1,225 students enrolled, making it the largest non-public school system in North Dakota.  At this morning's news conference, Dr. Rich Kruska talked about some of the recent changes. This year seventh and eighth graders were moved into the new academy in the basement of St. Mary's, while plans for expansion are still building.  And while change is a challenge, the focus remains the same.

"I want to reiterate that we are students focused, again just with all the business, we talk about growth and building and financial. It's sometimes easy to lose focus on what's important but it really is the student," says seventh and eighth grade academy administrator Carmen Cain.

Light of Christ Catholic Schools is planning for the growth with the help of a firm  that will begin the process of conducting studies and holding public forums this fall.
