Minot Mayor Not Seeking Re-Election

Posted: Updated:

After serving as mayor of Minot for almost 12 years, Curt Zimbelman will not seek re-election for a fourth term. Zimbelman says it's time for some new leadership.

"I've enjoyed my time as mayor but it's time for someone new," says Zimbelman.

Raised right here in Minot, Banker Curt Zimbelman served as an alderman for city council for 24 years before being elected as mayor in 2002.

"I just wanted to do what I could for a city that I've lived in all my life, that's kind of how I've gone about my business," says Zimbelman.

Zimbelman led the city through the 2011 Souris River flood, and is pleased with how Minot is bouncing back. And now, growing and expanding.

"It's been exciting times, it's very difficult to step out sometimes when things are growing so fast, you see such great changes happening, a ribbon cutting every week, it will do fine," says Zimbelman.

North Dakota political figures say Zimbelman will be missed.

"Thank you for everything, Curt Zimbelman has been an incredible guy to work with over the last few years and what he has done in the way of personal sacrifice tops us all," says Governor Jack Dalrymple.

"I've gotten to know a lot of people, made a lot of contacts, I feel good about working relations that we've built around the state as well as in Washington D.C. So, I feel good about where we're at right now, really good about having the chance to finish up and watch others take it forward," says Zimbelman.

Zimbelman made the announcement today because he wants to give people who made want to for the position enough notice. He ends his final term next June, and says he does not have any political ambitions for the future.

There's typically a few delays around harvest time, as railroads work to ship grain and other ag products out of the state, but with a late harvest, long drying times, and tough winter conditions, the state's two major rail providers are still playing a game of catch up.
