Good Works: The Reading Farmer

Posted: Updated:

Jim Karn is a storyteller. But not just any story. He likes to read his own tales from his self-published book, Little Jimmy's Life on the Farm Stories.

"Began writing stories, and I needed to see whether children were interested in my stories before I went any further. I tried them on my grandchildren; they seemed to like them," says Karn.

He reads to the children at the Open Door Community Center once a week. He dresses the part of a farmer, and the kids just call him grandpa.

He spent his career as an ag researcher, so he managed to get his hands dirty from time to time. Are his farm stories truth or fiction? He says it really doesn't matter.

"As a scientist, when I worked at Northern Great Plains Research Lab, truth is all important, and fact is all important. And that's what you have to have. But with creative writing, the idea is something that other people, children in this case, enjoy. And to me, the facts come second," says Karn.

Story time is followed by hugs. And Karn says those will last him for the rest of the week.
