Developers Discuss Flood-Damaged Businesses

Posted: Updated:

It's no surprise that the city of Minot is expanding fast. New businesses are being built all over town. But what about the business areas in Minot that have been untouched since the 2011  flood?

"Sometimes some of the best land is passed up because people say, "Oh let's tear it down. No you don't have to tear it down to make things good. If you go and look at the Oak Park theater, that's a good building. And, it survived two floods," says Gary Kramlich Watne Realtors.

The shopping center sits right across from Oak Park. And before the wrath of the 2011 flood, it was an area for high business potential.

However, since the flood, these buildings have been at a standstill.

But behind closed doors, realtors, developers and contractors have been in the early phases of discussion on what can be done with this potential property.

"The actual buildings that are there don't occupy that much land. There are 10. 7 acres. And, they've only utilized and developed about 3 of it," says Kramlich.

One possible plan for the Oak Park Shopping Center could be to revamp and restore the old time movie theater.

"All I heard is what the developer talked with the people from the arts foundation here in town. They want to expand the stage, so not only just do movies, but musical functions and drama functions," says Kramlich.

They're also talking about adding apartments to this area so the residents can utilize what the park has to offer.

"And, they'll utilize the buildings to the North as a retail location for the theater. And, for the apartments, a convenience store and those other things you just kind of need," says Kramlich.

Once again these plans are still new, but developers are hoping to restore this business area to bring in housing and business back into the Magic City.

Tentatively, on August 15th the developers will have to apply to get on the agenda for the September Planning Commission meeting. This is where they will present their plans for the shopping center.
