Doctors Warn Gym Patrons About MRSA Risk

Posted: Updated:

It's important for people to understand the necessity of properly cleaning sports equipment because contracting an infection like MRSA can be deadly.

"If you get an MRSA infection, it's usually a lot more aggressive. You can die from it. You can have infections anywhere on the body. Just a few weeks ago, I saw a woman who came in to see me and her, almost her total face, was broken out with pustules from the staph orious. So, it's bad to get if you do get it," says infections disease specialist Dr. Kent Martin.

MRSA is an infection that can happen on any part of the body, but usually it happens in areas that get damp and sweaty.

"You'll notice it starts to evolve into a purplish discoloration, and then there will be a big flair around it," says Dr. Martin.

Doctors say it's best to constantly clean gym equipment in order to prevent the risk of infection.

"I would try to encourage the owners to teach their trainers to carefully wipe off the equipment for the people that they are training or responsible for," says Dr. Martin.

And that's exactly what they're doing.

"We encourage our members and our clients to clean the mats or the machines, cardio equipment, things like that, before and after each of their uses," says personal trainer Michelle Krichgassher.

Cleaning the machines and equipment is important, but personal hygiene is also key in preventing an MRSA infection.

"And  that doesn't mean just using Dial soap. It means cut your fingernails right, scrub your fingernails. Be careful about putting your hands on your face when you go out in public because you could inoculate your nose and get an active infection," says Dr. Martin.

A MRSA infection can be deadly, but taking the right precautions when exercising can greatly reduce the risk of infection.
