Band Students Tuning Up Their Skills

Posted: Updated:

It maybe summer vacation but there is no rest for the musically gifted. Bismarck Public Schools musical staff banded together to create camps in both band and orchestra to help improve young minds for their academic future.

Band Director David Augustadt says, "The camp is about 11year old it was a collective of all the music teacher who wanted a way for the incoming students to kind of get a slightly more advanced start on their instruments. Learn some theory skills, learn the basics of posture and breathing."

This two week series teaches each student the individual quirks of their specific instrument through various lessons. classes like music theory, where they play different rhythmic games, computer class, where they listen, watch and participate in different online programs, individual practice, where they play their specific instruments in groups, and band or orchestra practice where they all play together. all truly help, just ask the students.

6th Grader Ryan Balzer says, "I do love it when I learn stuff. Like we play games and learn quarter notes, half notes, rest beats, rhythm. I just love the drums. It's awesome to just go with the rhythm and the beat. You just keep on going with it."

6th Grader Lily Dever says, "Learned the fingers and stuff, and it's fun to learn new songs."

With sessions happening during both the morning and afternoon, any child can find their learning rhythm and succeed at their own pace and just to prove this point, when asked about name's favorite part of camp this is what he said.

Balzer says, "Oh I don't know everything, everything was my favorite experience."
