Mandan Man Donates Bone Marrow

Posted: Updated:

Five years ago, Jesse Maher signed up for the bone marrow registry.

"A friend of mine had a cousin of hers who was ill and needed a bone marrow transplant," says Jesse.

He wasn't a match. But, in April, he got a call.

"A lady called and told me I was a possible match, and that I was to go in and get some blood drawn and some samples taken. And then, they match you up on a DNA level with the recipient. So, they sent those away, and then they called me about two months later and told me that I was a match, and that if I wanted to, I would be the one that would be able to donate bone marrow," says Jesse.

For the past several days, Jesse has been getting injections that increase the amount of bone marrow his body produces. And today, he's is in Washington, D.C. donating  to a 62-year-old man he's never met.

"That person has an aggressive Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma," says oncologist and hematologist Dr. Vijay Chaudhary, Sanford Health.

It's an aggressive approach, and the recipient has probably already received two or three lines of chemotherapy.

"This is being done to put breaks on the tumor and possibly get the patient into remission and extend their life," says Dr. Chaudhary.

Something Jesse says makes it all worthwhile.

"At the end of the day, like I said, you get to give somebody hope to live or they live. And that's just a really cool thing," says Jesse.

Giving new meaning to the phrase, "To the world you might be one person, but to one person you might be the world."

Jesse donated his bone marrow earlier this morning, and he says it went well.
He's already visited the White House and plans to visit the Smithsonian tomorrow.

Doctor Chaudhary says when it comes to bone marrow, it can be hard to find a match.
And he's only seen three donors pass through Sanford in the last two years.
