Author Publishes Book at Eighty-Eight

LaVera Edick has always loved art and writing but for the longest time, life got in the way. She grew up in Nebraska, a child of the Depression, the Dust Bowl, the dirty 30s. But she recalls not everyone was destitute.

"Some people recall they were the good days during the bad days because even though there was a shortage of money, there was an abundance of love and family togetherness. My father taught me early in life that God has a plan for each of us. And God helps those who help themselves," says Edick.

She outlines her life story in her book, Four Score and More, which she started three years ago at the age of 85. She tells of her childhood, three marriages, five children, and learning to support herself and her family over the years. It was while she was selling Stanley Home Products, makeup and cleaning supplies, that she was transferred to Bismarck.

"I became almost a hermit, I guess, in writing that book for the past three years. I'd even find myself waking up in the middle of the night with a thought that just had to be gotten down right now. I kept a pad and pencil by my bedside. But oftentimes I'd get up and write for two to three hours at night," says Edick.

And she's not resting on her laurels. She's doing the illustrations for her second book, called Kat Tales and Kitty Capers, about a woman she considers to be her second mother.

"I'm hoping that my readers will find enjoyment in recalling memories of their own bygone days, or perhaps those of their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents. Also, I hope it will inspire some people to leave a legacy to their family," says Edick.

And she did it without the help of a computer. She wrote her book in longhand.
