Residents Voice Sidewalk Concerns

Posted: Updated:

Residents of Bismarck spoke at a public hearing about some reasons why they don't want sidewalks installed in their neighborhoods.

"The street was developed in 1970 and the trees that were planted, were planted in the way where sidewalks would be, and they are now 43 years old. So these trees are big and beautiful, so if you come on our street, you will notice that it's one of the most beautiful streets, I believe, in Bismarck because the trees cover the entire street," says Bismarck resident Dale Zimmerman.

And some residents are concerned about what will happen to animals once those trees are removed.

"I enjoy the pheasants. I enjoy the turkeys. I enjoy the deer, and they have barriers, but they adapt and they've done pretty good up there," says Bismarck resident John Davis.

Even though homeowners are saying some of the sidewalk installations aren't necessary, the city of Bismarck does have an ordinance requiring them.

"We have an ordinance that requires sidewalks- in all areas of town. And part of when that ordinance was passed, there were certain areas of town that didn't already have it, so whenever we put in new developments, we require sidewalks to go in on the new developments," says Bismarck City Commissioner Josh Askvig.

Deferring the sidewalk construction for a period of time is an option for the City Commission; however, at some point, city commissioners say those sidewalks will have to be put in.
