Getting School Buses Ready

Posted: Updated:

Bismarck Public School District Transportation employees are spending the summer repairing and cleaning buses.

They're getting ready for an annual Highway Patrol inspection, which looks at the school buses every year to make sure they're safe and clean.

"We're doing our yearly DOT inspection so that's every thing from tires to, you know, checking the wheelchair lift to make sure they're working properly. Basically going through the buses from bumper to bumper, checking every light, to make sure they're working properly," says mechanic James Nelson.

The transportation teams have passed the inspections for more than 20 years, and this year should be no different. In addition to the work, they're also doing some learning.

"We try to stay up on all the new technology that's coming out on buses and most of the bus manufacturers offer training courses to keep up with that and we've been doing that as much as we can to stay up on the new technology. And it's changing rapidly," says Nelson.

The bus systems are repaired before breakdowns occur.

"I guess I didn't realize they do all that preparation in the summer, but no, It's definitely really good so you don't have any breakdowns or anything because I'm sure it scares littler kids," says Sandy Jacobson.

Safety also extends to other drivers, who need to be mindful of school bus rules.

"It's close to that time of year again. Watch out for the little ones. Pay attention to our stop arms. We did put some signage on the back that, you know, it's illegal to pass while the stop arm is out so we're hoping that everybody will notices that this year and pay attention to it. We want to have another safe school year," says assistant director of transportation Bob Brown.

These inspections protect others on the road, as well as the students on board.

"It's a major safety factor, you know, you got precious cargo on these buses. It's not only my kids, but it's everybody else's kids," says Nelson.

The bus drivers will also train for working with special needs students and drivers will attend a defensive driving course before school starts.
