Deep-Fried Twinkies Return to State Fair

Posted: Updated:

Carnival rides, shows and fried-foods are all staples of the state fair. But there's one beloved food item that almost didn't make it back, deep-fried Twinkies.

"I was a little scared but I knew that someone would pick it up one way or another. It may not of come back with the full name but that's a pretty big name to get rid of that easily," says Stephen Salazar.

Salazar says he's been serving up deep-fried Twinkies at the North Dakota State Fair since 2002 and it's one of the more popular items he sells.

"It's different because a normal Twinkie is like eating a cake with a cream filling. Here it's like getting a, well it's hot, it's sort of like a funnel cake. A cream-filled funnel cake on a stick is what it kind of reminds me of," says Salazar.

A steady stream of customers are keeping Salazar and his staff busy. Some want to try a fried Twinkie, like me, for the first time.

"It was good. It was like a sensation of pancake in my mouth," says Erin Dammann.

She says she wasn't Twinkies biggest customer before Hostess shut down last year, but after trying a deep-fried one at the fair, she says she may have to have another.
