Fire Pit Safety Measures

Posted: Updated:

For many, the summer means spending time outdoors around a fire.

People are lighting up their fire pits in their backyard.  But, depending on who you talk to, that may not necessarily be a good thing.

"We've been receiving phone calls about neighbors concerned about fire pits in their area or complaining about the ashes produced by the fire pits," says Minot fire inspector Brian Andersen.

According to the Minot City Ordinance, residents can have and use fire pits within city limits as long as they follow several guidelines set by the Minot Fire Department.

"If it's a wood-burning fire pit, it has to be 25 feet away from combustible materials.  You have to rake all the leaves and dead sticks around the area."

In addition, Andersen says you need have water nearby in case the fire pit sparks a fire.

While fire pits are permitted within city limits, if a neighbor calls you in, it is considered a nuisance fire and the fire department will make you put it out.

"If it continues there might be some action taken later on.  That would be law enforcement determination," says Andersen.

While fire pits have the potential to produce smoke and large flames, there are ways to prevent your neighbor from calling you in.

"The best thing you can do is invite your neighbors over and show them how your fire works.  Show them what safety measures you're taking, so that the fire isn't going to spread to their building," says Andersen.

So, the next time you go and light your fire pit, hopefully, you'll do it safely and have a little fun, too.

With all of the rain we've had, Andersen says the grass is not as dry as it's been in the past, which has helped reduce the number of fire pit related incidents this summer.
