Sanford Helps African Nations Prepare for Disasters

Posted: Updated:

Doctors and nurses have traveled halfway around the world to train in Bismarck this week.
The country of Ghana and the North Dakota National Guard have worked together for nearly a decade, but the nation also has strong ties to Sanford. In fact, Sanford has four clinics over there and is in the process of building a fifth.

A delegation from Ghana is in charge of educating their country's EMT trainers.

"You know we have a training school for EMTs, but we've not had a lot of experience in scenario creation and simulation creation so coming here has been exciting," says Ghana ambulance service coordinator Dr. Barnabas Gandau.

The group is simulating traumatic and medical emergencies using high-tech equipment that isn't available in their country.

"They respond just like actual patients will. They talk, they bleed, they cry. The wounds that are on them appear to be real," says Sanford director of simulation Travis Spier.

Doctors say so far the training has exceeded their expectations. And although their equipment won't be as fancy, they look forward to holding simulations of their own.

"It appears they have a very significant short fall in simulation devices in Ghana. He's actually asked for some assistance in that area. They're looking for simulation devices, mannequins that are used and become obsolete in North Dakota that maybe they can employ them in Ghana," says Maj. Brock Larson, ND National Guard.

The week long training is part of a program designed to help African nations prepare for and respond to disasters.
