Inside Business: Amish Country Furnishings

Posted: Updated:

Finding the right piece of furniture to fit a room's unique shape, size or decor can be a frustrating process. But, at Amish Country Furnishings, you don't have to settle for good enough or run of the mill. Owner Justin Schmaltz says the choices are nearly limitless when it comes to custom-made furniture.

"From beginning to end, we guide you through.  You can customize your pieces in any way, everything from wood type, stain, size, fabrics, leather, all those different choices.  The only limit to what you can build is physics," says Schmaltz.

That's because each piece of furniture is handcrafted by one of the nearly 100 Amish builders he works with. And it's that uniqueness that sets Schmaltz's business apart from other furniture stores.

"I hand pick every builder that I use.  I've met with every builder that I use in the Amish communities.  I deal with builders in Wisconsin, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio.  All these builders will customize any piece of furniture."

They can even create individual pieces from drawings or photographs. But the already-built pieces on his showroom floor are popular as well.

Dining room sets are very popular these days.  Schmaltz says one of his tables has an elm wood top and solid ebony inlays, and gets a lot of attention in the store.

Dining room sets overall are one of his biggest sellers, but Schmaltz says he sells a little big of everything. And that's what he had hoped for when he opened his downtown location two years ago.

"With the growth and all the people coming in, I see nothing but an upside potential for the business," says Schmaltz.

In fact, he says, after just two years in his downtown location, Schmaltz is already looking at some expansion opportunities.
