Honest Tea Puts North Dakotans to the Test

Posted: Updated:

How honest are Americans? That's what one company is trying to find out.
Honest Tea set up a booth in downtown Bismarck to conduct a social experiment. Employees of Honest Tea have been hiding out and watching people passing by to see how honest North Dakotans are.

On a warm afternoon a bottle of iced tea might sound refreshing and some people walking around downtown got just that when they happened to see a tea stand on the corner of 4th and Broadway.

"It's pretty good actually I just saw it right here, came to see what it was and mango orange, pretty good," says Adam Ray.

But there was one thing the stand was missing, employees to watch it and take payment. The only way to pay was a clear box, on the honor system.

"It looks like there are some pretty honest people in Bismarck. So I'm happy to see that. I don't know much about it other than that," says Erin Hill Oban.

Finding out who's honest and who's not is exactly what the company wants to see. To do so they had employees hiding within view of the stand to document what people do.

"People are watching right now? Other than you guys, I guess? I didn't know that," says Erin Hill Oban.

"We want to make sure that we're not too suspicious. Like we're loitering or anything like that. So we always do change clothes every so often, so people don't think that we're that people," says Brian Laridis.

While the results won't be released until later this month, Laridis says that many North Dakotan's have been pretty honest about paying for their tea.

One thing that didn't happen, nobody tried to steal the whole box of money, which Laridis says has happened in other states.

The only time the employees will get involved in the stand is if someone tried to take the box.
If someone walks off without paying, the only thing they do is take note.

If you want to see how North Dakota stacked up, the results from all fifty states will be online at nationalhonestyindex.com on July 23rd.
