Governor Dalrymple Appoints Two New Judges

Posted: Updated:

According to the state Supreme Court court filings in western North Dakota have increased 37 percent over the past two years.

To help with the work load, the legislature approved two new judgeships in western North Dakota, and today Governor Jack Dalrymple appointed those judges.

Watford City lawyer Robin Schmidt will serve in Watford City, and Paul Jacobson, who lives in Bismarck and Williston, will serve in Williston.

The new appointees bring the number of judges in western North Dakota up to nine, from seven.

In a statement Dalrymple says he chose Schmidt and Jacobson because of their strong ties to western North Dakota, and their excellent legal skills.

The Northwest Judicial District serves Burke, Divide, McKenzie, Mountrail, Ward and Williams counties.  Currently, the district consists of five judgeships in Minot and two judgeships in Williston. The Legislature also created a new judgeship which is yet to be filled for the state's East Central Judicial District.
