High school football teams start practice in about a month, but no worries for football fans, the Shrine Bowl is next week.
Bishop Ryan coach Brad Borkhuis will head up the 11-man West team next Saturday. The guys head out to Grand Forks for a week of practice this Sunday and while winning the game is the goal, there are more important factors at play. Shriners International helps kids out who are affected by different sicknesses and physical deficiencies. For Coach, he's happy to be a small part of what they stand for.
"When they asked me it was an honor not just to coach but to represent an organization like the Shriners. They've done so many good things and I got a chance at Bemidji State when I was playing there that they actually have a Shrine game there that they sponsor and it's a very important program and a very great group that we support," says Borkhuis.
Area kids crowd the roster on the West team. Coach Borkhuis will have two of his kids on the squad, Chase Fugere and Isaac Tafelmeyer. There's also two Magi on the roster, Bryan Doerr and Tanner Gust. Stanley-Powers Lake and Rugby have two representatives as well. There will be two games next Saturday from Grand Forks. The 11 man game will be at 4 p.m. and the 9 man game will follow at 7 p.m.
