Bakken Leadership Conference

Posted: Updated:

Congressman Kevin Cramer came through Minot today to host the chairman of the U.S. House committee on energy and commerce along with committee leaders from several states.

The 6 committee members traveled on their own time to see first hand how North Dakota can be a model for the rest of the country.

"There's a curiosity that people have about us and it's our opportunity as a state to shine and to demonstrate to the country while they're watching so closely how well we can do it and it's a great opportunity to be able to bring 6 of my colleagues from the House of Representatives to spend one day in North Dakota," says Cramer.

The committee members saw fracking jobs, oil wells, and rail and pipeline facilities during their visit, and were able to see how our booming state operates.

"If we're going to be competitive in the global marketplace, we have to have low cost of electricity, low cost of transportation fuel, and we have the ability to do it. So, I think that's the challenge we have moving forward and coming to North Dakota today certainly reemphasizes that to me. This is the type of state, this is the type of activity that we need throughout America to be truly energy independent," says Congressman Ed Whitfield, Kentucky, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy and Power.

"The unemployment rate that is so low and all of the opportunities, the cash bonuses to get people to work at fast food restaurants for crying out loud, we're looking forward to having that kind of opportunity come to southeastern Ohio," says Congressman Bill Johnson, Ohio, Committee on Energy and Commerce.

One of the committee members says he's never visited the Peace Garden state before and said he was impressed by the beauty and clean air.

Congressman Cramer says he hopes the committee members bring this experience with them when they draft legislation to help make our country more energy secure.
