Family Focus: Boat Safety

Posted: Updated:

Schools out, the weather is hot, and many families are heading to the lake to avoid the heat. But, before you take your kids on a boat, make sure you're familiar with all the safety rules and regulations.

The North Dakota lakes are crowded with boaters, so parents need to know the most important safety tips when they take their kids to the water.

Scott Doering at Vallely Sport & Marine says before selling customers a boat, he gives them a rundown on safety laws.

"If you're going to be at the lake you should have life jackets for everybody that's going to be on your boat. Kids from 10 years old to infants have to have them on," says Doering.

If you're doing activities such as water skiing or tubing, North Dakota law says you need a designated spotter.

"That means someone is going to be driving your boat, and someone designated to be watching the tube, skier, or wake boarder at all times," says Doering.

It's best to do those types of activities away from other boaters.

"Keep away from congested areas, if you want to be safe you want to find an area of the lake with less traffic or find a lake that gets less traffic. The more people you have watching, the more eyes on kids the better," says Doering.

Besides packing your boat with water, snacks, and sunscreen, make sure you have all the right equipment incase of an emergency.

"You should also have a foam cushion available in your boat, by law. You should have a horn or something to make a noise incase of an emergency," says Doering.
