State Fair Fights Hunger

Posted: Updated:

Things were stacking up in the North Dakota State Fair Center on Thursday. And, it's all in an effort to fight hunger in North Dakota, but in a unique way.

For the first time ever, the North Dakota State Fair is teaming up with BNSF Railway and Nash Finch to help fight hunger.

"In the past year, one in ten people did need to receive food from food banks in order to feed their families. So, it is very important that we keep these food banks stocked. And, that's one of our goals in helping out with this," says Jennifer Hubrig, NDSF Marketing Director.

But, here's the cool part, they're creating a display out of 15,000 cans that will look like combine in a corn field.

After the fair the cans will be donated to the Great Plains Food Bank.

"We definitely had two goals when creating this exhibit. One was to bring light that hunger is an issue in North Dakota. And, the other one was to bring a light to how important agriculture is," says Hubrig.

And, here's a fun fact, there's actually a science that's goes into stacking these cans.

"It actually requires a lot of engineering and physics. So, what we do is we use auto cad and revit to actually create the structure before we do anything with the canned food. And, we create leveling materials for each layer to be sure that structure is created accurately," says Chakshu Mehta, Can Struction.

And, you can see this can creation all 9 days of the Fair.

Those who want to help out, you can drop off cans on Monday, July 22nd at the State Fair gates.

And, when you donate, you'll receive a dollar off for that day's gate admission.
