More Help for Individuals Hit by 2011 Floods

Posted: Updated:

The North Dakota State Tax Commissioner was in the Magic City today to talk about House Bill 1459, which will bring more aid to some individuals affected by the 2011 Mouse River Flood.

"While the recovery from river flooding in Minot and other North Dakota communities took place in 2011, still progresses.  The devastation and destruction from those events are likely still fresh in the minds of many," stated North Dakota State Tax Commissioner Corey Fong.  While communities have made great strides recovering from the 2011 flood, some residents in Minot and surrounding towns are still rebuilding.  But more help is on the way for those individuals.

"The sales tax rebate is the one thing where we thought we could give some assistance back to the people who had been so impacted," said North Dakota Senator Karen Krebsbach.  In the latest Legislative session, Minot area Legislators developed legislation that allows people impacted by the 2011 flood, to apply for a portion of the state sales tax.  "This is a refund of state sales tax, this is not a refund of local option tax.  Local option tax is obviously very important to give back to the community, so that you can use those sales tax dollars to help with the recovery effort, to help with the rebuilding, to help with the infrastructure," added Fong.

To meet the program guidelines, the homeowner must have received assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency because of the Mouse River Flood.  Homeowners will receive a refund of sales on purchases of major appliances, residential furniture, and building supplies.  "I hope the citizens of North Dakota who can use this tool will certainly take advantage of it.  It's very valuable, and much needed," said North Dakota Representative Andy Maragos.

The refund is limited to one claim per household with a maximum of $2,500 Dollars.  And qualifying homeowners can make purchases and apply up until December 31st of this year.  "Minot can be very proud of the fact that even though it was a difficult time, you're a stronger community as a result of what happened in 2011, no doubt," finished Fong.
