Team North Dakota Preps for Nationals

Posted: Updated:

For wrestlers who make the sport their year-round mission, the big event starts Friday in Fargo. It's the Junior and Cadet nationals.

Team North Dakota is working out at Bismarck High to get ready for this event.

The Junior division is for 17-18 year olds while the cadet is for ages 15-16. They have both Greco-roman and freestyle, plus there's a female division.

"It's the largest wrestling tournament in the world based on number of participants. There's actually five tournaments occurring," says Scott Knowlen.

"The atmosphere is really different. It can actually be intimidating, but it can also drive you to want to do better and succeed," says Jordan Shearer.

"It's a great vibe. It's awesome. You get a great feeling walking into the Fargodome with all those 48 states there. It's crazy and it's fun and it's exciting," says Preston Lehman.

Ryan Blees of Bismarck was a national runner-up last year. He's taking a different approach this time.

"I'm not going to do Greco and freestyle this year. I'm just going to freestyle and I'm going to go down to 152 pounds and really focus one trying to get some bigger college's looking at me and trying to win the tournament. It is probably the biggest recruiting tournament that college coaches come to," says Blees.

Team North Dakota got ready for Fargo by taking two teams to the national duals in Oklahoma.

Lehman went 16-0 in that event.
