Inside Business: Puklich Chevrolet

Posted: Updated:

Elyse Puklich has never been a stranger to the business of selling cars.

"I've grown up with some of the people here.  There are technicians that are as old as I am," says Puklich.

She began working in the car business when she was just 14, much like her father Stan did when he was a teen. Although he didn't coddle his daughter, Stan made sure every door possible at Puklich Chevrolet was open for her, letting her see both the good and the bad sides of the operation, even letting her work in the service department, after initially hesitating.

"'No girls belong in service. It's dirty. what do you want to do that for?'"

Still, Puklich left the dealership for several years, before returning to the business that was in her blood. That was 20 years ago. Now, she's long gotten over sometimes being the only female in the room.

"Parts of it can be unnerving," says Puklich.

Through hard work and a team approach, she's helped grow the business from its humble beginnings 30 years ago, to nearly 100 loyal employees today. She's also helped craft the dealership into a recognized industry leader, becoming a GM Legacy Dealer, and taking on the opportunity to be one of the first in the country to adopt a new GM look.

Puklich says the entire facility was remodeled only six years ago, but they're going through what they're calling a soft remodeling to make it more user-friendly, building new walls to separate the noisy service areas from the customer areas, and providing a better experience for customers.

"For years in the write-up area, it's been noisy. It's been hot. It's been loud. It's been rushed.  People come in and feel they need to rip off 20 things wrong right away as the phone is ringing.  We need to calm it down."

That's just one of the many changes Puklich is looking forward to in the future, as she continues to be in the driver's seat of her business.
