False Press Release Warns Park-Goers of Possible Fines

Posted: Updated:

On Monday, KMOT received a press release from who we thought was the Minot Park District. The release states that a new ordinance will take place that can fine Oak Park guests $100 if they're caught feeding the geese.

But after doing some research, we realized something wasn't quite right.

The release quoted Minot Park District executive director Ron Merritt, explaining a new campaign called "Don't feed the fowl." But after contacting Merritt, we discovered the press release was fake, the quotes were forged, and the release gave a made up e-mail address claiming to be the Park District.

Merritt says although the Park District encourages attendees not to feed the geese, they have not yet created any ordinance regarding the issue. In fact, Merritt says they did have to take down signs in the park that they didn't put up, saying that there was a fine for feeding the birds. Merritt hopes that instead of creating a false release, people contact them with their concerns.

"This press release did not come from me or from this office. It was misrepresenting us, we certainly encourage people if they have concerns in any of our parks to give us a call, send us an email, send us a letter, come to a meeting and voice their opinions. And it would be addressed," says Merritt.

There is no fine for feeding the geese.
