Fire Destroys Gaffaney's Stationary Building

Posted: Updated:

A large fire broke out at the Gaffaney's Stationary building in downtown Williston just before 6:30 yesterday evening.

More than 60 firefighters battled the blaze overnight, ensuring the flames didn't spread to neighboring buildings.

Crews entered through windows only to be pushed back by intense heat and flames.

Fire Chief Alan Hanson says they tried every trick in the book, but that it was clear within 45 minutes  there was no chance the building was going to be saved.

He says he believes the fire started in the basement, but that the cause is still being investigated.

"We hate losing a building. I tell you that's the hardest part is when you have to tell the owner of a building we just can't save it. But we have to think of the safety of our people. And more attacks in there and we would have lost people," says Williston Fire Chief Alan Hanson.

Fire crews are still at the scene battling hot spots and making sure the fire doesn't spark back up.
