Independence Classic Comes to Minot

Posted: Updated:

Rubber was burning and engines were roaring today for the 2013 Independence Classic at the Magic City International Raceway.

"I really like it. It's a lot of fun.  It's not stressful, you just come out and have a good time," says Pat Keating.

Pat Keating, one of the track owners, says it's a great place to come for some weekend racing, and the drivers definitely agree.

"Out on the race track it's, 'I want to win,' but in the pits, it's chat and how's this working, how's that working,'" says racer Lloyd Kreklwich, Saskatchewan.

"Everybody is friendly, but it's pretty competitive.  Everybody wants to win, but it's fun," says racer Dennis Kittleson, Montana.

Modified vehicles of every kind turned out for today's bracket race.  Car hoods were hiding engines pumping out 300 to over 1000 horsepower.

"In bracket racing, as far as being competitive, you've got to be consistent with your times and be very good on the tree.  That means you're taking off as close to the tree coming down as you can," says Keating.

There's a strong camaraderie between racers in the pits having a good time and talking about their vehicles, but on the drag strip, their minds are completely focused.

"You do your burnout right and just watch the lights. You concentrate. Don't look at anything else.  It's nice you can forget about everything else when you're in the car," says Kittleson.

"I put a sticker on my dash actually that says, 'Don't think.'  A lot of times you get so pumped up you forget to think about what you're doing.  You have to think," says Kreklewich.

Each individual race may only last a matter of seconds, but the joy and excitement continue for hours.

"The noise, the excitement, the burnouts, the speed of the cars and watching them try to beat each other in each race is just really exciting,"
