Mandan Chiefs Are Back in the State Tournament Hunt

Posted: Updated:

The Mandan Chiefs started statewide league play 2-9.  Despite sitting at the bottom of the standings, The Chiefs didn't let that stop them from taking down the Governors twice in two days to get themselves back in the state tournament hunt.

Post 40 pulled off a pair of one run victory's against Bismarck Wednesday and Thursday. The Chiefs rallied late yesterday, scoring two runs in the 9th to come back and take down the Govs in front of their home crowd.  It was the first win for Mandan on July 4th since 2011 and even with the slow start this season, the team knows its not about how you start. Its about how you finish.

"When Coach Stanley was here, he told us it doesn't matter how you do in the regular season. And you look back at the Mandan teams of the 90's, they'd finish just about 500. They'd finish a little bit above 500, and it doesn't really matter what you do in the regular season. It's placing and getting ready for the state tournament and just improving until you get to the state tournament. And if you're a team that's ready to go when tournament time arrives, that's the key," says Mandan head coach Ryne Jungling.

And with a little less than half the season left to play, Coach Jungling says his team has the right mentality, whether it's game day or practice.

"They're having fun. That's the big thing. They're coming ready to play. They're learning. They listen. They're willing to do what we ask them, and that's huge just to be coachable. That's kind

The Chiefs take the field tomorrow for a doubleheader against Aberdeen.
