Minot Horseshoe Club

Posted: Updated:

Whether you're at a family reunion, cookout, or a picnic, chances are you've pitched horseshoes. It's a fun sport and here in Minot there's a club dedicated to it.

Every Tuesday people come to courts at the Minot Moose Lodge to pitch horseshoes as part of the Minot Horseshoe Club and it's a nice little diversion from the work week.

"We all have a lot of fun, it's a fun social sport. I come out here just to have fun and enjoy the night," club member Kammie Anderson says.

The great thing about the club is no matter your age, you can join. It's only been around since 1997, but Burton Clark's been throwing long before that.

"I started pitching way back in the 40's. At that time, we didn't know what sanctioned horseshoes was, we just played up behind the barn or picnic pitching and I got to be pretty good at it," says Clark.

One thing's for sure, I'm not a good pitche, but there is a mother and daughter from Drake who know their way around the courts, and they'll be going to Utah later this month to prove it.

Kammie Anderson and her daughter Chessa qualified for the world championships in St. George.

"Wow , it's actually gonna be quite an experience. My mom and I have been to four world tournaments, actually, and it kinda gives us a reason to travel. We don't get to go anywhere so it's actually really nice to actually go other places and share the game of horseshoes with everybody else," Chessa says.

Kammie had success on this stage before, and she knows what the opportunity means.

"It means a shot to take a first place in the worlds. I've taken first in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and that was a lot of fund and I'm hoping to do it again this year."

There's tournaments all over this country.

"Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Hibbing, Minnesota, Spearfish, South Dakota, Ainsworth, Nebraska, Pocatillo," lists Clark.

With that travel schedule, horseshoes isn't just a game you play in your backyard anymore.
