Officials Ask Residents to Obey Fireworks Restrictions

Fireworks don't become legal in city limits until July 4th.

"People who are shooting off fireworks early are basically breaking the law," says Mayor Ward Koeser.

But that's not stopping local residents from getting an early start on the celebration. 

 "We actually hoped that by having a day that you could legally do it, that people would shift shooting them off until that particular day. I don't know that that's been the case because there have certainly been a lot of them going off, but we would ask people not to," says Koeser.

And last night, residents were speaking up on social media. One woman said, "There are children trying to sleep!"

Another warned "You really don't want me out in my PJ's yelling at you at midnight!" 

Commissioners did not place a restriction on what time fireworks can begin on the 4th, so technically, you can start firing them off tonight at midnight with no restrictions for the following 25 hours.

Koeser expects that time frame to be quite hectic for emergency personnel.

"Fortunately, we've been quite wet. So, I don't think the fire danger is as high this year as sometimes. But our police chief and fire chief, I think, would both love it if there were no fireworks at all. It creates problems, there are a lot of injuries from them, there are safety issues, plus the annoyance."

If you want to watch a legal fireworks display, Koeser suggests heading out to the fairgrounds tonight. The annual show will begin at nightfall.
