Game and Fish Department Patrols River for Safety Violations

Posted: Updated:

There are rules of the road or, rules of the river, but the road and the water are very different places.

"You're dealing with the current, the wind, the weather.  You don't have headlights.  There's no lines on the water to follow," says district warden Ryan Tunge, North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

That means anyone out on the river operating a boat has a lot of things to pay attention to.

"There's going to be jet skiers out there, kayakers, people in canoes, people in pontoons and fast boats," says boat and water safety coordinator Nancy Boldt.

That means the potential for a lot of danger, if someone is too buzzed to boat.

"With the boating population in Bismarck and Mandan, and a congested area to boat in, the numbers have started to increase," says Tunge.

It's illegal to boat with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.10, slightly higher than the legal limit for driving.

Since many people do like to enjoy a few cold ones on the water, the Game and Fish Department wants to remind people to be cautious about how much they consume.

"The waters are going to be very congested this weekend.  They're talking about heat waves.  When there's a lot of heat and we have a small amount of time in North Dakota to recreate, people are going to be headed for the water this weekend," says Boldt.

Game and Fish routinely patrols the Missouri River, looking for people who are boating under the influence or committing other safety violations, like not having enough life jackets on board, or tubing without a spotter.
