Unsung Heroes Keep Fourth of July Events Spiffy

Posted: Updated:

Like a row of green soldiers, they line the streets of Mandan ready to serve. But Spiffy Biffs don't magically appear.

"It takes about four to five hours to set up, and then we have to clean them," says Colin Walth.

The guys in yellow attend to the private privies at least once a day, and admit the work isn't always pleasant.

"Diapers, there's a lot of bad stuff, but diapers are usually the worst. We have to handle them, bring them out, put them in a garbage can and go from there, so that's probably the messiest," says Walth.

Usually the crews just do their business.

"When we dump, that's the only time we ever somewhat deal with it so that's when we send it to the other guys to dump," says Walth.

"If it's bad, he will have me go with so I can learn. And I'm trained, but he's with for pretty much everything," says Ethan Fettig.

Workers say doing the dirty work has perks.

"It's more busy in the summer. We put in a ton of hours in the summer and we set our own hours, go in early, take off usually later in the day, do whatever we want," says Walth.

Porta-professionals may not see the world, but they do get in on all the local action happening around town.

"There's pow wows, there's parades, there's Fourth of July, there's all these things, probably the most interesting thing is all the things that we do," says Fettig.

And since they're working, these guys get in for free.

"It isn't terrible because it isn't hard labor, but it's a heck of a lot of hours. It gets old, but I mean someone's gotta do it, and it just happens to be us," says Fettig.

So if you see a guy in yellow, make sure to say hello, and thank him for his work.
