Dalrymple Requests Presidential Disaster Declaration

Posted: Updated:

Governor Jack Dalrymple is requesting a federal disaster declaration.

Dalrymple sent a letter to President Obama earlier today asking for help for 19 North Dakota counties and two Indian reservations. The areas are recovering from severe storms and a record-breaking, four-week period of heavy rainfall that resulted in major overland flooding and flooding along rivers.

Many areas of the state received record rainfall between May 17 and June 16, leading to major flooding that caused an estimated $7 million in damages to roads, bridges and other public infrastructure. Flooding led to evacuations, placed 12 dams in northeast North Dakota at risk and caused major property damage.

"The record-breaking wet cycle created major flooding in several areas of the state," Dalrymple says. "Several communities had already been hard hit by spring flooding and they depleted their emergency resources before the wet cycle set in and caused additional flooding.  I have requested a federal disaster declaration to ensure that local, state and federal resources are available for critical flood recovery work."

Dalrymple has requested that the Federal Emergency Management Agency make federal funding available through its Public Assistance Program.
