Mandan Prepares for a Busy Week

Posted: Updated:

Vickie Marsalek has been crafting for the last 25 years, something she learned from her dad. And over the years, she says she's only gotten better.

"I'm kind of ashamed of some of the stuff I first made because I thought people should buy it. They did but when I look back, it's, I've gotten better," says Vickie Marsalek.

It was fifteen years ago when she started attending Art in the Park, and now it's something she looks forward to each year.

"It's a nice show, people come out, a lot of people come out, it's just a fun show to do," says Vickie Marsalek.

Which makes getting a spot as a vendor a little more difficult. Some even have to get put on a waiting list.

"In the past few years we've has at least ten. There have been years where we've had 15 or 20 and we get calls and say you know you'll just have to hang tight," says Susie Kocourek.

This year there will be 28 food booths and 146 vender booths in the park. And of course it's not the only big event happing this week.

Mandan Rodeo Days kicked off for the 134th year.

"It started in 1879. It didn't start with a rodeo it started with horse races and a baseball game. But they were celebrating the Fourth of July, and a rodeo started shortly after that," says Neil Ness.

The rodeo on the third will be dedicated to all the patriots, and there's something special this year.

"We have the USS North Dakota, a replica of that, and some of the crew is going to be here for our grand entry," says Neil Ness.

There will also be a raffle to help raise money for the wounded warrior project. Last year the rodeo raised $10,000 for it.
