Mandan Rodeo Days Return

Posted: Updated:

It just wouldn't be a 4th of July holiday in Mandan without Rodeo Days.

That's not totally true, obviously, because the 4th was celebrated before 1879 but no one living now was around to see it.

The rodeo is central to this celebration and it runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.

More than 500 contestants have signed up for this 134th annual event.

"We have 30, 40, 50 people from North Dakota competing here along with some big names. Brittany Fleck, for one, who made it to the National Finals Rodeo a couple years ago. Fred Whitfield is going to be here this year again for the third time. We got some big names, and we got some local names as well," says rodeo committee chairman Neil Ness.

The sport of rodeo goes year round, but the heart of the season happens in the summer, and Ness says Mandan continues a tradition few rodeo's have.

"That's rodeo for sure and this is a little unique our rodeo has the chuck wagon races that most rodeo's don't have. I think the closest one is Calgary, which is a real crowd pleaser. And we're lucky, because this is a multi-use facility, and we turn it from a race track into a rodeo ground. And because it's a race track, we get to use that for the chuck wagon races," says Ness.

Ness also reminds fans they can avoid lines and save money by getting advanced tickets from Petro Serve USA, Central Market, Boot Barn and Western Unlimited.
