Accident Totals Down for May

Posted: Updated:

Traffic numbers have been on the rise for the Williston PD. And drivers say the roads are as dangerous as ever.

"Not safe. I'm way more aware of everyone else's surroundings than myself because you just have to be super cautious out here," says Williston resident Taylor Stinson.

But in May, accident totals were actually down from last year, by over seven percent.

"I really don't have a reason or a cause for that, it's just something that happens," says Williston Police Captain Tom Ladwig.

Citations issued were down as well, but Ladwig says the numbers for one month don't tell the whole story. For the year, accidents are still up over 10 percent.

"For the year 2013 total accidents we're up considerably. 741 for this year, as opposed to 672 for last year at this time," says Captain Ladwig.

Traffic related injuries are up as well, by over 125 percent. Ladwig says the injury total is disturbing, but the decrease in accidents is a good sign.

"That's what we strive for, is zero accidents and zero injuries. So when something is down in that respect it's good news for us, and for the motoring public in Williston."

Stinson agrees that the accident numbers are good news, and she says the high traffic volume has actually helped her out.

"My driving has gotten so good, I never knew it."
