Military Daughter Follows in Father's Footsteps

Posted: Updated:

Col. Mike Aberle has put on his uniform for the last time.

"After 33 1/2 years of that, it's going to be different.  I just look at it as a new mission.  We always get different jobs in the military, and I'm moving on to a different one now," says Aberle.

He joined the National Guard on his 17th birthday, and his career has taken him to nearly every state and 18 different countries.

"It's amazing the opportunities the National Guard has presented me," says Aberle.

In addition to serving his country, he was also presented with the opportunity to continue a family tradition of service.

"I'm getting sworn in by my dad and that's gonna be really cool because that's one of the last things he gets to do," says Pvt. Rebbekah McPherron.

Rebbekah McPherron is also 17, and grew up surrounded by the military lifestyle.

"My biological dad was in the Air Force. His dad was a veteran, too. Mike is in the National Guard.  His dad is also a veteran," says McPherron.

So after a few long talks with her family, she decided she was next in line.

"It's a good feeling.  I don't think I've ever been so excited in my life," says McPherron.

Aberle says when he joined, he didn't intend to make a career out of it. But now that McPherron has seen the legacy of service, she hopes to stay in the military for a long time.
