Underpass Planned

Posted: Updated:

Trying to get across the west bypass can be tricky, especially if you're turning left.

City leaders have been going over plans for an underpass, but haven't been able to reach a route that pleases the majority of people...until now.

One of the early plans had the underpass going from 18th Street to 18th Street, but that created problems with three major businesses. Western Cooperative Credit Union and Farm Credit Services said their main entrances would have been affected by that route, and School District Number 1 would have had some of their land behind McVay taken. That's why city leaders decided to go with the option to start the underpass on 18th street and connect it with Bison Drive.

"You'll end up being able to just go straight on bison and 18th street. You'll go through and underpass. The bypass, which is 2&85 route, will be elevated a little bit, that will get a little higher," said Williston Public Works Director Monte Meiers.

This route leaves the main entrances to farm credit services and Western Cooperative Credit Union untouched.

"Having it go on the backside of the credit union instead of the front side really, it's better we're happy with that," said President and CEO of Western Cooperative Credit Union Melanie Stillwell.

With this route if you're traveling east on 2 and 85, you will be able to access the underpass by a semi circle loop ramp. When you get off onto 18th street west, there will be a three quarter intersection.

"You'll be able to take a left turn if you're going east, or a right turn if you're going west. If you're on 18th street west coming east, you'll end up coming up to the intersection just as you do now, and you'll be able to take a right, you just won't be able to go through it," Meiers added.

The state has set aside funds for this project, and now that city leaders have decided on a plan, it is in the hands of the DOT.

"They will make a decision in which option to take. Hopefully they'll listen to what a recommendation is, but there's no guarantee that would happen," added Meiers.

The underpass will also have a bike path and side walk for pedestrians.
