Medical Simulation Truck Comes to North Dakota

Posted: Updated:

A wave of new technology will be delivered to medical emergency personnel through four Simulation in Motion- North Dakota trucks.

They'll travel to the four corners of the state, providing critical care and emergency training to all crisis-access hospitals and EMS units in the state.

One part of the truck simulates an actual emergency room and training is as close to real life as possible, with a patient who breathes, blinks and responds to treatment.

It used to be that first responders would watch a colleague or practice on a real person. These traumatic medical events are high-risk and few and far in between, but with emergency room and ambulance simulation, safe and effective training is possible.

"With simulation, you can tailor the learning to the learner. You can repeat a scenario. If something goes wrong, you don't harm anyone," says medical director Dr. Jon Allen.

It isn't just training teams on how to perform medical procedures, but how to deal with the emotions that come along with traumatic emergencies, as well.

"You know this kid in small towns. So, you have to overcome emotional trauma in order to treat them," says Sanford sim coordinator Deb Grabow.

SIM-ND was made possible by a three-year $4.98 million grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Hemsley Charitable Trust. To sustain its program, the North Dakota Simulation, Teaching and Research Center at UND will lead a coordinated effort between the State Health Department and six major hospitals in the state, including Sanford and St. Alexius in Bismarck.

"We're all working together to bring a standardized curriculum to all the teams. Our goal is to improve  the health care of North Dakota, improve patient safety and improve the teamwork effort of delivering medical care," says Dr. Allen.

With the financial and staff support of the hospitals, SIM-ND hopes to provide training to hospitals and EMS units at least once a year at NO COST.
